iPads for Special Education
The iPad is a fabulous learning tool in the classroom, it is also excellent for breaking down barriers that special need children may face when learning. Technology opens doors and builds bridges to learning concepts faced by special need children.
Choosing Apps for children with special needs When choosing apps for children we need to consider the students needs, environment and task. A great way to do this is by using the SETT framework. The SETT framework, developed by Joy Zabala (2010) is an organisational instrument that foster the educational success of students with disabilities by creating student-centred, environmentally useful and task focused tool system. SETT is an acronym for Student, Environments, Tasks and Tools. Below are examples of guiding questions concerning inclusive technologies. |
S- Student - What are the student’s current abilities? - What are the student’s special needs? - What are the functional areas of concern E- Environments - What activities take place in the environment? -Where will the children participate: classroom, home, community, therapy? -What is the physical arrangement T- Tasks - What specific tasks occur in the environment? -What activities is the student expected to do? - What does success look like? T- Tools |
